🧪 Special casesHow to remove rust stains

Iron · dissolve with acid, never chlorine bleach

The orange or brown spots left by rusty hangers, buttons and zippers, iron-rich water, or a hairpin in the washing machine are iron oxide, in other words rust. Detergent and chlorine bleach won't remove them; they need to be dissolved with something acidic.

🔬 Why this order works

Iron oxide dissolves in acid. The acids you can use at home are citric acid, lemon juice and vinegar; stronger still are commercial rust removers for fabric. Chlorine bleach can oxidize the iron further and make the stain darker.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

👕 By fabric

⚪ White cotton & linen

Citric acid or lemon juice + salt + sunlight removes most of it.

🎨 Colors & synthetics

Acid can discolor some dyes, so test on the inside before using.

🧶 Wool, silk & cashmere

Take it to a dry cleaner and tell them it's a rust stain.

🚫 Don't

  • Chlorine bleach — the stain gets darker.
  • Mixing acid with chlorine bleach — toxic gas.
  • Washing again without dealing with the source of the rust — check hangers and zippers first.

⏳ If it has already dried

Old rust stains mostly fade with repeated acid treatment too. However, the fabric may have weakened where the rust sat for a long time.

💡 Tip

If orange spots keep appearing only on white laundry, first suspect coins or hairpins in the washing machine, or a rusty drying rack.

❓ Common questions

Which is better, lemon juice or citric acid?

They work about the same. Citric acid powder is convenient because it's easy to get the strength right and leaves no stickiness. Lemon juice is handy in a pinch.

Are commercial rust removers safe?

Some fabric rust removers contain strong acids such as oxalic acid, so wear gloves, ventilate and follow the directions. Keep them off metal and marble.
